Remember Me Thursday in the Age of COVID-19

The 8th annual Remember Me Thursday® (an international social media awareness day honoring shelter pets) will take place on Thursday, September 24, 2020. This year will be unlike any other. Not only will there be more celebrity luminaries championing the cause than ever before, the event will be happening amid the global COVID-19 crisis. Historically on this day, people around the world gather to light candles and honor the precious pets who never got a second chance. This year, large events in many communities are canceled because of safety concerns.

Since Remember Me Thursday began in 2013, the pet euthanasia rate in the United States has steadily declined. However, each year, more than a million pets are unnecessarily losing their lives in this country and even more around the globe. Even if we can’t be together in person, we still owe it to these animals to show up and help others see the light about pet adoption.

Ways to Participate in Remember Me Thursday 2020

Share your rescue pet story.

On Remember Me Thursday, our goal is that anyone who logs onto social media that day will see a message about pet adoption. So snap a photo of your pet or choose an old favorite, and post away! (We also have ready-made graphics for you to share.) Use hashtag #SeeTheLight to be included in the global conversation.

Host or attend a socially distanced candlelighting ceremony.

Smaller gatherings may still be possible with masks and 6 feet of social distancing. Call your favorite pet lovers and meet up in a large space, like a public park. (If you don’t want to get close to light candles, you can use a virtual candle by downloading the free Remember Me Thursday app.) Alternately, use Remember Me Thursday as an opportunity to reconnect with friends (and their pets!) virtually on Zoom video chat. Catch up on life in quarantine and get inspired to save animals.

Support your local shelter.

Every shelter has been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak. While some organizations are seeing an increased demand for adoptions, others are struggling to stay afloat. Both scenarios come with unique challenges. Find out what your local shelter needs, and support them however you can. Make and donate masks for the medical staff, or donate pet food to a program that assists people who have lost their jobs. Any small gesture helps save lives.

You can also enter the Remember Me Thursday Contest to win up to $5,000 and a thousand pounds of pet food for your favorite shelter or rescue. This year’s contest opens August 20. Stay tuned for more details!

Join our virtual event on Thursday, September 24.
