Betty Cocker was delivered to an overwhelmed shelter in a rural North Alabama as a stray in mid-October. She was so matted and filthy that she couldn’t even move her back legs, which had allowed her to gain an extra 25 pounds. Under her armor of mats and grime was a trusting sweetheart who never knew she had been neglected and abandoned. She trustingly submitted herself to a thorough grooming and subsequent poking and prodding at the vet’s clinic. Betty proceeded to win over every single person who saw her picture, met her eyes or crossed her path with her obvious trust and unconditional love. Betty loves you the second she meets you.

Under her armor of mats and grime was a trusting sweetheart who never knew she had been neglected and abandoned.

Betty’s adopters submitted an application for her based on her touching story. Once she entered her new home, it was no longer about what the family could do for Betty’s life. It became about what Betty added to their lives. She showered her new family with unconditional love and adoration, making her new “dad” the center of her world. She met the 2-year-old niece’s kisses with enthusiasm and patience. She conquered every physical challenge involved in following her new canine and human family around the yard and up and down the stairs. She showed them that a compassionate and loving spirit will always find a way to give. And that gift was rewarded with a forever home.

During the 2015 Blue Buffalo Home 4 the Holidays campaign (Oct. 1, 2015 – Jan. 4, 2016), participating animal organizations are encouraged to enter heartwarming adoption success stories. Submissions can be made weekly by email or tagging stories with #LightTheirWayHome, and at the end of each week Helen Woodward Animal Center will select a winning story to be featured on this very blog! After the campaign ends on Jan. 4, 2016, the weekly winning stories will be compiled into a pool and voted on by partnered organizations, animal welfare fans and the public. The story with the most votes will win a $1,000 donation for their animal organization and will be announced on Helen Woodward Animal Center’s blog in February 2016. For more rules and guidelines, please click here.
