Day of Volunteering Turns Into Lifetime of Friendship
By Prairie Paws Animal Shelter, located in Ottawa, Kansas
Sweet Hoops had been at Prairie Paws Animal Shelter for 115 days awaiting his hero. He came to us as a stray. We thought his stay was going to be very short; he was adopted soon after his arrival but was returned for being “too puppy-like.” That didn’t phase this energetic cutie. During his lengthy stay, he quickly became a staff favorite and even “painted” a portrait for our big fundraising event in October.
On painting day, a group of Ottawa University students volunteered at the shelter to walk dogs and help us clean. Hoops caught the attention of one those awesome volunteers. Two months past and the volunteer couldn’t stop thinking about the little tan terrier mix who stole his heart and called to see if he was still available. He was! Hoops found the hero he had been waiting for all that time.
During the 2015 Blue Buffalo Home 4 the Holidays campaign (Oct. 1, 2015 – Jan. 4, 2016), participating animal organizations are encouraged to enter heartwarming adoption success stories. Submissions can be made weekly by email or tagging stories with #LightTheirWayHome, and at the end of each week Helen Woodward Animal Center will select a winning story to be featured on this very blog! After the campaign ends on Jan. 4, 2016, the weekly winning stories will be compiled into a pool and voted on by partnered organizations, animal welfare fans and the public. The story with the most votes will win a $1,000 donation for their animal organization and will be announced on Helen Woodward Animal Center’s blog in February 2016.
