Something To Be Thankful For
By Pet Rescue of Maryland, located in Monkton, Maryland
Imagine losing your best friend, your home, your family, all that was familiar to you. That’s exactly what happened to Sonny, a 9½ year old Golden Retriever, when his owner died. Family members were unable to care for Sonny and his bonded companion, Shayna, a cockapoo, so they reached out to Pet Rescue of Maryland for help.
Shayna met her new family at her very first adoption event and went to her forever home the following week. Everyone at the events loved Sonny, his smiling face, his wonderful disposition, but no one wanted the responsibility of caring for a senior dog with some health issues.
Pet Rescue of Maryland realized that it would take a special adopter to make a place in their home and their heart for Sonny. Every Saturday, Sonny and his foster family would attend our weekly adoption events. Four months passed and Sonny still had not found his forever home. Then, one Saturday, Ginny, a former adopter stopped by to update us on Willow, an Australian Shepherd that she adopted from the rescue three years ago.
When Ginny met Sonny, it was love at first sight. Ginny was not concerned that Sonny was a senior or that he had medical issues. When Ginny looked at Sonny, all she saw was his wonderful smile. Ginny decided to adopt Sonny, but his adoption was dependent on how well he got along with Willow. Everyone in the rescue was anxious about the introduction; this would be the perfect home for Sonny. Thankfully, the only one who loved Sonny more than Ginny was Willow.
Sonny was adopted on November 25 and spent Thanksgiving in his new home. He has recovered everything he lost. Sonny now has love, security, a home, a new family and a new best friend, Willow. Now, that’s really something to be thankful for!
During the 2014 Blue Buffalo Home 4 the Holidays campaign (Oct. 1, 2014 – Jan. 2, 2015), participating animal organizations are encouraged to enter heartwarming adoption success stories. Submissions can be made weekly by email or tagging stories with #BBH4TH, and at the end of each week Helen Woodward Animal Center will select a winning story to be featured on this very blog! After the campaign ends on Jan. 2, 2015, the weekly winning stories will be compiled into a pool and voted on by partnered organizations, animal welfare fans and the public. The story with the most votes will win a $1,000 donation for their animal organization and will be announced on Helen Woodward Animal Center’s blog in February, 2015.
