Hurricane Sandy Pet Finds Happiness
January 8, 2013, Adoption Update from Lassie and Jessica:
Jessica sent us this photo of Lassie, now re-named Darla, in her new home! She looks so comfortable already! Darla not only got a new mom, but she also got a new sister. That’s Ellie to her right! We couldn’t be happier!
If you haven’t read about Lassie’s amazing adoption, please scroll below for the full story. Lassie was a Hurricane Sandy pet who was flown out of the destruction last November.
Lassie Goes Home! – Original Story
A very special adoption closed the 14th Annual Iams Home 4 the Holidays Pet Adoption Drive – the reunion of Hurricane Sandy pup named Lassie with SeaWorld Rescue Team Member Jessica DeCoursey, who accompanied the orphan pet to safety during the Hurricane Sandy Pets flight.
On November 17, Helen Woodward Animal Center had the unique opportunity to assist some East Coast pets when over 40 orphaned dogs and cats were flown across the country to the Center. The East Coast shelter pets had been waiting for forever homes when Hurricane Sandy hit and left their facilities uninhabitable. The trip was made possible by Southwest Airlines, whose Flight Crews donated their time and whose fuel provider BP donated fuel for the flight; along with the donated manpower of SeaWorld, which provided veterinarians and technicians to assist and chaperone the pets across the country as well as provide the transportation for the pets to their new home at the Center.
Now, to conclude the campaign, one loving pup is flying back to the East Coast in the arms of the very same woman who rescued her. SeaWorld Rescue Team Member Jessica DeCoursey safely chaperoned the 7-year old Pug/Pekingese blend to Helen Woodward Animal Center, but could not get her fuzzy face out of her mind upon returning home to Virginia. The gentle-natured dog received multiple medical treatments (dental, skin rashes and benign tumor removals) and was still under Center veterinary care when Jessica wrote to ask if the Center how Lassie was doing. The photos she sent of the special journey she had traveled with Lassie was enough to convince us that Jessica was the perfect forever family match for Lassie.
So, on Friday, January 4, Jessica returned to the Center to adopt the dog she had been dreaming about. We wish them a lifetime of love and joy together and can’t be happier for them!
