By Advocates 4 Animals, Inc., located in Xenia, Ohio
After being hit by a vehicle and badly wounded, Jasper’s owner tossed him into the local animal welfare facility. A 1-year-old, yellow lab-blend, Jasper had a multitude of severe injuries, all left untreated as he sat in his kennel wondering what would come next. Luckily, Advocates 4 Animals (A4A) heard Jasper’s story, thanks to an urgent e-mail plea, and immediately scheduled for a volunteer driver to drive several hours each way to bring Jasper back to A4A Rescue, to safety.
Upon Jasper’s entry to A4A, he was in too much pain to take advantage of the nutritious and plentiful food now being offered to him. He was covered from head to tail in fleas, ticks and worms and his wounds were still oozing with fluids. Veterinary tests showed that Jasper’s pelvis was fractured in multiple places, which would require six weeks minimum of bed rest before we could address the other injuries.
Jasper had a wonderful volunteer foster home at A4A where he enjoyed the company of both old and young humans, cats and other dogs. After nearly two months of recovery, Jasper was eating, wagging his tail and loving his comforting surroundings. His pelvis healed nicely and next it was time to address his front leg, which dangled, useless in front of him. Our A4A Rescue veterinarian recommended full amputation and Jasper had the surgery performed at the same time as his neuter.
The surgery went very well and shortly after his recovery from the leg removal surgery, Jasper was adopted into a loving, forever home to call his very own – with two loving humans and another special-needs canine. We couldn’t have dreamed of a better home for sweet Jasper.
Jasper continues to live a happy, healthy life that is full of love and kindness. Jasper’s story shows us all what a difference we can make in the lives of others when we step forward and take action. When we all work together towards a common goal, miracles can happen – a miracle did happen when Jasper’s life was saved and we are forever grateful to have played a role in Jasper’s life.
Every week during the 2012 Iams Home 4 the Holidays campaign (Oct. 1, 2012 – Jan. 2, 2013), participating animal organizations are encouraged to enter heartwarming adoption success stories. Submissions can be made weekly by snail mail, fax or email, and at the end of each week Helen Woodward Animal Center and Iams will select a winning story to be featured on this very blog! After the campaign ends on Jan. 2, 2013, the weekly winning stories will be compiled into a pool and voted on by partnered organizations, your fans and the public. The story with the most votes will win a $500 donation for their animal organization and will be announced on Helen Woodward Animal Center’s blog in February 2013.
