Most Heartwarming Story Winner for Week Six of ‘Iams Home 4 the Holidays’

Week got you run down? Here is this week’s ‘Most Heartwarming Story’ from Iams Home 4 the Holidays! Each Thursday Helen Woodward Animal Center announces the weekly winner of that week’s ‘Most Heartwarming Story’ from Iams Home 4 the Holidays! Animal welfare organizations from around the world are working together to find loving homes for 1.5 million orphaned animals this holiday season.

This week’s winner comes from Animal Allies! Sandy was a stray cat who wandered around a neighborhood in Minnesota with two broken legs caused by a pellet gun…

“I was never really fond of cats until I met Sandy.

Sandy is a large orange male cat.  He wandered in and out of our yard in the country. We noticed he had a bad back leg and was limping.  He would eat with the stray cats and was always friendly and liked to be near me.  Then one day he was sitting at my back door holding up his front paw.  My sister asked; Wasn’t I going to help that cat?

So, I called Joyce Harlow at Animal Allies in Red Wing, Minnesota.

Animal Allies agreed to help Sandy. They took him to be checked out by the Bluff’s Pet Clinic in Red Wing.  He was tested and found to be free of disease.  But the x-rays showed two broken legs (one front and one back) with pelletgun pellets — by both fractures.  Which meant he had been shot.

It had been too long to fix Sandy’s back leg, but the front may be repairable.  After trying a splint on the front leg to no avail, surgery was recommended. Again Animal Allies agreed to pay for the treatment.

After Sandy’s leg was pinned, he spent many weeks in a large kennel, so his leg could heal.  I cared for him during that time and made trips to the vet with him.  When his leg was healed, it was decided he needed to be kept inside. After caring for him for five months I couldn’t part with him.  My husband and I decided to adopt him!

Sandy is my first house cat and I’m very lucky to have him! He is very affectionate, loving, and loves to be around people.  Thanks to Animal Allies I have a wonderful companion.”

Remember: each week we choose a heartwarming story and that organization or rescue will be in the running for a $500 prize at the end of the campaign!
