Our newest arrival… Lily the Therapy Bunny

Hello and Goodbye

We had a brand new arrival at the Pet Encounter Therapy Department last week! Her name is Lily and she is a stunning dwarf rabbit with a lustrous, charcoal coat, expressive eyes and a calm spirit. A few of us rushed over to the P.E.T. building to meet her and gush over her, and she loved every minute of it! We adopted Lily from a rescue partner, Wee Companions, who said she would be the perfect bunny to serve in our P.E.T. Dept. For those of you who don’t know what Pet Encounter Therapy is, it’s a program that brings the unconditional love and tactile benefits of animals to people in facilities such as abused children’s shelters, hospitals, psychiatric facilities, and senior centers. Staff and volunteers take dogs, rabbits, birds, or guinea pigs to visit more than 45 facilities a month.

Studies document that holding and caressing an animal provides benefits such as relaxation, lower blood pressure, improved long- and short-term memory, and sensory stimuli. Plus, it’s just good for the soul!

Our P.E.T. animals are very, very special, so we treat them very, very special, too! They are pampered with a ton of love from our staff and volunteers. In fact, when guests visit them in the P.E.T. building, the guests don’t want to leave! They’d rather just stay, have a chat with a bunny, dance and sing with the birds, and snooze with the lizards.

On a sad note, we said goodbye to a very special friend last week as well. Cadbury, a P.E.T. bunny of ten years, passed away from old age. He was beloved by children, adults and seniors alike and will be missed very much. Cadbury was very special… he was found abandoned, duct-taped in a box, on a playground and was rescued. His past didn’t matter to him, though, he gave a lot of love throughout this decade. He had two beautiful mates, who he loved through and through, and lived a happy and love-filled life. We will miss your sweet spirit, Cadbury. Thank you for showing us what true unconditional love looks like!

You can see Cadbury enjoying a toy given to him by Surfdog Ricochet last December. He enjoyed it thoroughly!
