The release read, Warning! Some Girl (dogs) will Surf Topless at 5th Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon!
Topless ladies surfing?! What kind of event is this?! Ohhh ok, girl DOGS. Phew!
That came from our media release sent out worldwide just yesterday. And already, people are buzzing about the event. We are getting pretty fired up about the Surf-A-Thon here, too. Staff, volunteers and guests have been buzzing about it for weeks. And now, it’s almost here!
We’re preparing for a huge event! 120 surfing dogs, 150 surfing humans… and thousands of spectators. We all agree that this year’s event will be huge. Not only is it fun, but it makes a difference in the lives of animals and people. Proceeds support the programs and services that Helen Woodward Animal Center provides for animals and people in-need.
There’s not only surfing, but doggie yoga, a dog agility course, food, games, and…
- Surf Dog 2010 on September 12 will also feature, “Doo the Dah for the Dogs.” Individuals and teams of up to 10 will surf while wearing costumes. Judges including champion surfers and members of the host surfing club, Swami’s Surfing Association, will pick the top three individual or team costumes as well as the best themed team ride.
- Activities for “Sand Crabs” (non-surfers) will include the “Beach Bum and Bikini Babe Canine Costume Contest.” Dogs will strut their stuff on the “catwalk” as celebrity judges including Shorty (as seen on Animal Planet’s, “Pit Boss”) and Animal Planet veterinarian Dr. Stacy Funchino pick the best costumes. The 2008 contest was featured on The Travel Channel’s, “Bridget’s Sexiest Beaches,” resulting in Dog Beach of Del Mar being named one of the sexiest beaches in the world! (Yes, we see the irony in this. Girl dogs not wearing bikini tops? Sexy?)
- And our 2011 Beach Billboard Contest is still open. This is your chance to get your epic beach dawg up to the big time: a billboard on Highway 101! Entering your pooch is only $5!
We know this is going to be an amazing Surf-A-Thon. The only thing that could make it better is if you were there! Come out and support a great cause (and also get a tan) on September 12th, at Dog Beach. Pawabunga, everyone!
