A mother dog gave the most loving gift of all when she gave her life to save her puppies.….
The puppies were transferred to Helen Woodward Animal Center from a Kingman, Arizona animal shelter called, Help Animals Lives Today (HALT). HALT President Lotti Benker was contacted by a man who explained that he had found his female dog dead with her litter of eight puppies. It appeared that the mother dog had frozen while trying to save her 2-day-old pups.
Two of the puppies died before they could be transferred to HWAC. The other six arrived here when they were just a few days old. Three of them were in such a weakened state that they died in their foster homes in spite of round-the-clock care and bottle feeding.
Helen Woodward Animal Center Foster Care Supervisor Trisha Crawford reports, “We gave them strong names…Tonka, Tex, and Tiki… in hopes that it would help them gain the strength they needed to live.
Tonka, Tex, and Tiki are believed to be Shepard-mix puppies. Fully grown they are expected to weigh 50 to 60 pounds. Each of the pups has passed a physical examination and been altered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped. Their adoption fees will be $350 each. We are looking for families that want to begin life-long affairs with the puppies this Valentine’s week…not someone who feels bad for them.
All three of these little survivors are scheduled to become available for adoption Thursday morning at 11:00. If all goes well, they’ll spend Valentine’s Day with families who love them.
With Valentines Day just around the corner, don’t forget that we have a number of other orphans here at the Center are also looking for their new home, dogs like Reba.
And what better way to spread your love during Valentines Day then by heading over to Cupcake Love in Solana Beach and purchasing a very yummy Puppy Love Cupcake. Don’t forget, $1 for every Puppy Love Cupcake purchased goes directly to Helen Woodward Animal Center to help us love support our special friends every day of the year, not just on Valentine’s Day.
